How to Check Broken Links (Dead URLs) on Websites

WTDesignBD - Broken links can be referred to as dead, broken, poorly hosted or inactive links. Broken links are one of the factors that cause the decline in the quality of a blog, especially the SEO factor and which can reduce the ranking of your blog in search engines.

Following this lesson the steps to find and stop broken links and prevent them.

What is Broken Link

In simple definition: A broken link is a link which when opened, leads to an error page, is dead or inactive.

As a new visitor to your blog or website, you are trying to enter a link with a good description and you find that it redirects you to an error page. Most likely you will not return to such a blog or website.

Broken links affect the level of trust visitors have in the information or services provided by the blog or website.

Causes of Broken Links

There are several factors that can cause broken links. These factors are discussed below:

1. Error or Error Writing Link

When writing links, you have to stay focused and be careful by reading the article over and over again. Broken links can also be external links that are not part of your blog, so be careful.

2. Domain changes

Once there is a change in your domain, make sure all links actually redirect to your newly acquired domain.

3. Change of post/article permalink

Whenever there is a change to the post title it also affects the permalink but in most cases it changes automatically. Also there might be problems changing automatically so you need to check this and make manual changes.

4. Changes in site directory

This issue only appears on self-hosted sites like WordPress. When you move files to a new directory, all links change. Therefore you need to be redirected to a new directory.

5. Blog Comments

When a comment is dropped in the comment box containing a link, the inactivity of this link also causes the link to break. This is the most critical type because the blog owner may not be aware of it. So it is advised not to allow posting of links in the comments section.

6. Deleted Files

Links to files created for download such as images, videos, PDFs or others should be properly monitored if the file is deleted or moved from one address to another. This also causes broken links, please pay attention.

How to Check Broken links

This can be done by checking the links one by one... LOL. Sounds crazy? You will ask me what if you have millions of links on your blog. But don't be afraid.

Some websites allow you to be able to check for broken links on your blog for free without spending a dime. It just takes a little time!

So, how do you do this? Follow the steps below:

Get rid of Broken links

The image above is a report for the Longtechy blog. No broken or dead links were found on the blog. Let's see and see like this.

As I said, dead links mostly come from URLs in the comments section especially the commenter's profile link. So to solve it follow the steps given below:

1. Disable profile URL in blogger comments. Just like on this blog, links containing comments are not allowed and the name of the commenter does not have a link to the profile.

2. For other reported errors, click the src button next to it and you will be redirected to the article. Just delete or edit the link

Prevention

    1. When writing links that are part of your blog, do not write in full with subdomains. See the example below:
    less
    https://www.wtdesignbd.blogspot.com/p/contact.html https://www.wtdesignbd.blogspot.com/2020/10/best-method-for-creating-contact-page.html
Write only in the marked area starting with a slash ( / ).
    xml
    <a href="/p/contact-us.html"title="title">Texts</a>
It is done this way because at some point you may change the domain. You don't need to rewrite your link, it will redirect automatically
    2. Do not enable external links, make them in text form because you may not note changes to the link and that may cause damage

Notes
I suggest you check for broken links regularly for at least once in three months just for preventive maintenance.
